Full Version: iPhone 15 Pro overheats during video calls and charging; inconsistent battery life

I've been using the iPhone 15 Pro for about a month now, upgrading from a 12 Pro, and while the Action Button and USB-C port are nice, I'm genuinely struggling with the device overheating during basic tasks like video calls and rapid charging. The battery life also seems inconsistent, draining faster than expected on cellular despite the promised efficiency gains. For other long-term users, have you experienced similar thermal or battery issues, and did any software updates or settings adjustments noticeably improve the situation? How does the camera system, particularly the new 5x zoom, hold up in everyday low-light conditions compared to the dedicated telephoto on previous models?
Yep, I’ve had a similar heat issue during video calls and while fast charging. After updating to the latest iOS and closing some background apps, the phone cooled a bit, but it still gets warm under sustained use. If it stays hot with light tasks, check Battery Health (Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging) and consider a service if temps remain high.
When it comes to the 5x zoom in everyday use, daylight shots look good but in dim light the detail really drops compared to the main or a proper tele. My workaround is to stick with the main camera or 3x tele for low-light shots, enable Night mode where available, and keep the phone as steady as possible (tripod or leaning on something). Avoid aggressive digital crops from 5x when lighting isn’t optimal.
For battery life, I found a few wins: enable Low Power Mode during longer days, turn off Always-On Display if you don’t need it, and dim the screen a bit. Check Settings > Battery to see which apps are the biggest drains, and try to limit background activity for those. If you routinely need all-day endurance, a midsize charger and smart charging habits helped me a lot.
A quick software/settings checklist that helped me: install every iOS update, keep apps up to date, and enable Optimized Battery Charging to slow the charge near 100%. Disable features you don’t use (like background app refresh for rarely-used apps) and keep a comfortable brightness level. If you’re frequently in poor cellular coverage, LTE instead of 5G can also save power in some scenarios.
Camera settings tip for general use: shoot JPEG with the main camera for most shots; only go to 5x in good light or when you truly need distance. If you shoot in RAW (ProRAW) you’ll get more latitude to edit later, but it’s more noise and file-size heavy in low light. Night mode + tripod usually beats cranking ISO up high in low light.
If you’d like, tell me your region and what you primarily use the phone for (calls, photos, gaming). I can tailor a short, practical troubleshooting plan and a quick checklist to bring to a store or service appointment, plus a quick guide on which lens to reach for in common lighting conditions.
