My 2017 sedan's check engine light came on yesterday, and while the car seems to be running normally—no rough idle, no loss of power, and fuel economy is the same—I'm nervous about ignoring it. I don't have a code reader, and the local auto parts store said they can't pull codes for free anymore due to liability issues. For those who are more mechanically inclined, what's the best first step here? Should I invest in a basic OBD2 scanner myself, or is it worth going straight to a mechanic for a diagnosis? I'm also wondering if something simple like a loose gas cap could trigger it even after I've tightened it, and how long is it reasonably safe to drive with the light on but no apparent symptoms?
