I'm an intermediate oil painter who has always worked in a realistic style, but I'm feeling creatively stagnant and want to explore Impressionism to capture light and atmosphere rather than detail. My attempts so far feel muddy and overworked, as I struggle to break the habit of blending and instead apply distinct, visible brushstrokes of pure color. For painters who have made a similar transition, what exercises or studies helped you most in understanding the Impressionist approach to color and composition? How do you plan a painting when the goal is the impression of a scene, and what techniques do you use to keep your colors vibrant and avoid that muddy mixture on the canvas?
