The techniques for neuroscience brain mapping keep evolving too. Better MRI sequences, higher field strengths, new contrast mechanisms - all these are improving what we can see. The combination with other methods like EEG and MEG gives us both high spatial and temporal resolution.
The computational methods for analyzing these huge datasets are just as important. Machine learning is helping find patterns in the connectivity data that humans might miss.
What about the work on non-human neuroscience brain mapping? The mouse brain connectome projects are also advancing rapidly. Being able to combine detailed structural mapping with functional measurements and even manipulation (optogenetics) in animal models is incredibly powerful.
