I'm a moderator for a large, niche hobbyist forum that's seen a recent influx of new members, and our existing community guidelines feel outdated and too vague to handle the new dynamics, like heated debates that turn personal and an increase in low-effort promotional posts. I'm leading a committee to rewrite the rules, but I want them to be constructive and foster a welcoming environment, not just a list of prohibitions. For other moderators or community managers who have successfully revised their guidelines, what was your process for gathering member input and building consensus? How did you phrase rules about contentious topics to be clear yet flexible, and what enforcement strategies have worked best to educate new users rather than immediately resorting to bans?
