I finally have some time to dive into a meaty RPG after a busy year, and I'm looking at the best RPGs of 2024 but feeling overwhelmed by the choices between massive open-world sequels and acclaimed indie narratives. I loved the depth of games like Baldur's Gate 3 and am looking for something with rich character customization and meaningful choices, but I'm worried some of the big releases might be bloated or buggy. For players who have sunk time into last year's top titles, which one offered the most satisfying progression and world-building, and did any of the smaller, story-driven RPGs manage to deliver a comparable experience to the AAA giants without the hundred-hour time commitment?
You're not alone. In 2024 there were big open-world titles and also a crop of tighter, story-driven RPGs. If you want a premium feel without a huge time sink, look for games pitched as narrative-focused around 12–25 hours. Use a simple scorecard: 1) is the world immersive and memorable? 2) do my choices visibly influence outcomes or character arcs? 3) is the combat engaging but not grindy? Pick 2–3 that fit and commit to finishing the main arc to judge the overall experience.
Progression vs world-building: look for games where progression changes how you play (new abilities tied to story moments, not just loot), companions evolve with your choices, and the world reveals itself through exploration and lore that you discover through play rather than expository text. Aim for games where side quests reinforce the main narrative rather than padding.
Testing approach: check reviews for length and pacing; if you’re shopping indie, see if there are demos or early access hours you can test. Do a 2–3 hour trial of a candidate and note if the story hook, pacing, and combat stay compelling. If there’s a strong narrative arc with a consistent tone, you’re likely onto something.
To tailor a shortlist, tell me your platform (PC, Switch, or mobile), and whether you prefer turn-based, real-time, or tactical combat; any constraints on price or feel. If you want, I’ll pull 2–3 specific recommendations with rough playtimes and what each does well.
