I've been producing electronic music as a hobby for a couple of years and feel confident in my mixing skills, but my tracks always sound weak and lack punch compared to professional releases when played on different systems. I know the final step is proper audio mastering, but I'm overwhelmed by the process and the expensive online services. For producers who have learned to master their own work, what was the most critical lesson or tool that improved your results? Did investing in specific monitoring, using reference tracks more systematically, or finally understanding how to properly use a limiter and multiband compressor make the biggest difference in achieving competitive loudness and clarity without destroying the dynamics of your mix?
