I'm a parent trying to foster a love of science in my elementary-aged kids, and we've had fun with classic home science experiments like baking soda volcanoes, but I want to move beyond just spectacle to activities that teach real concepts like pH, density, or simple chemical reactions. My challenge is finding projects that are safe and manageable at home but still have a clear learning objective and a genuine "investigation" component, not just following steps to a known result. For other parents or educators, what are your most successful experiments that sparked genuine curiosity and questions? How do you handle the inevitable mess and sourcing of materials, and do you have any recommendations for kits or online resources that provide a structured yet open-ended framework for young kids to start thinking like little scientists?
