I'm a member of a small religious community, and our local municipality has recently denied our application to build a modest house of worship, citing zoning regulations about traffic and parking that seem disproportionately applied compared to approvals for larger secular venues. We believe this constitutes a violation of our religious freedom, but we're unsure of the best path forward, whether it's seeking a legal opinion, launching a public awareness campaign, or pursuing a formal appeal through the planning board. For others who have navigated similar land-use conflicts, what strategies proved most effective in asserting your rights under relevant laws? How did you build community support and navigate the political process, and at what point did you determine it was necessary to involve legal counsel specializing in religious land use?
