I was recently prescribed a strong course of antibiotics for a stubborn sinus infection, and while it cleared the infection, I'm now dealing with severe digestive issues, including cramping and diarrhea, that started a few days into the treatment. My pharmacist mentioned it could be a common antibiotic side effect, possibly even a mild case of C. diff, and recommended probiotics. I'm feeling frustrated that the cure seems almost as bad as the illness. For others who have experienced significant gastrointestinal side effects from antibiotics, what strategies helped you recover your gut health? Did you find a specific probiotic strain or fermented foods more effective, and how long did it typically take for your digestion to return to normal after finishing the medication? I'm also wondering if I should contact my doctor about these ongoing symptoms.
That sounds really rough. GI upset after antibiotics is common but not something to live with. Start with hydration (electrolyte solutions if you have them), small bland meals, and rest. If the diarrhea lasts beyond a couple days after finishing meds or you develop fever, dizziness, or dehydration, contact your clinician sooner rather than later.
