Full Version: Should I edit existing mods first or learn the scripting language from scratch?

I've been playing a classic RPG for years and want to start creating my own mods to add new quests and characters, but I'm overwhelmed by the complexity of the official toolkit. I have basic programming knowledge, but the documentation is sparse and the existing modding community seems to use a lot of unofficial tools and workarounds. For experienced modders, how did you get past the initial learning curve? Should I start by trying to edit simple existing mods to understand the structure, or focus on learning the scripting language from the ground up? I'm also unsure how to properly test my mods without breaking my main game installation.
