I'm finally upgrading my old car's stereo to a modern head unit with a touchscreen, and I'm torn between models that prioritize CarPlay versus Android Auto. I use an Android phone daily, but my wife uses an iPhone, and we both drive the car regularly. I've read about the basic differences, but I'm looking for real-world user experience on which system offers better reliability, more useful navigation integration, and less frustrating voice commands for things like reading texts or making calls. For households with mixed phone ecosystems, which system have you found to be the better compromise, and are there specific head units that handle switching between the two seamlessly without constant re-pairing?
From my experience, CarPlay runs smoother on iPhones and Google Assistant is more capable on Android Auto, but both platforms work fine once you're used to them. The best compromise for a mixed household is a head unit that supports both CarPlay and Android Auto and, ideally, can pair both phones and switch between them without you re-pairing every time. Look for wireless CarPlay and wireless Android Auto if you want the least friction, but know wireless tends to be slightly less stable than wired on some cars. Some brands offer true dual‑phone support with automatic switching when you connect the other phone, while others require you to choose in the head unit menu; check the manual. For navigation, either platform works with Google Maps/Waze; for voice commands, Google Assistant tends to feel more natural on Android, Siri on iOS, but you’ll want to customize the wake word behavior and responses. If you want, tell me your car year and budget and I can suggest 2–3 models that fit mixed-use households.
