I'm an admin for a rapidly growing subreddit focused on mental health support, and our current, loosely-defined moderation policies are no longer sufficient. We're seeing an influx of well-meaning but potentially harmful advice, subtle self-promotion from coaches, and users in acute crisis who need immediate professional help we can't provide. We need to draft clear, compassionate rules that prioritize safety without stifling peer support. For moderators of similar sensitive communities, how have you structured your policies around issues like crisis intervention, misinformation, and promotional content? How do you enforce these rules consistently while accounting for nuance, and what tools or automations have you found indispensable for managing the volume?
Prioritize safety by publishing a compassionate, concrete code of conduct that covers crisis intervention, misinformation, and promotional content. Establish a crisis escalation flow: if a post or comment indicates someone is in immediate danger, moderators should provide empathetic responses and promptly direct them to professional help and local emergency resources; never diagnose or treat, and always include verifiable helplines such as the US Lifeline at 988 or equivalents elsewhere. Use a pinned resource page and a one-page post that explains how to seek help, what moderators will do, and how to contact them. For content that might be risky medical or therapeutic advice, set a policy to remove or quarantine until it’s verified.
Enforcement needs a documented ladder and a transparent process. Start with a warm reminder, then DM a private warning, then a temporary mute, and finally removal for persistent issues. Keep a moderator log with dates, actions, and rationales so decisions are defensible and consistent. Publicly celebrate helpful, on-topic contributions to reinforce norms, and train multiple moderators to apply rules evenly.
Misinformation policy: require sources for any health-specific claims, flag uncertain posts as needing verification, and create a dedicated myth-busting thread where members can discuss common misconceptions with evidence. Use a bot or manual check to flag unverified medical advice for review, and provide a safe space for questions while steering away from definitive professional claims.

Automation and tools can help scale safety: use platform automation to label crisis posts, quarantine posts with medical or harmful advice, and route high-risk content to mod review. Maintain a public moderation log, use modmail for sensitive issues, and prepare concise response templates for common crisis scenarios to ensure consistency while preserving empathy.
