I'm slowly building out my smart home ecosystem, starting with lights and a thermostat, but I'm worried about compatibility and getting locked into one brand. I currently have a mix of Google Nest and Philips Hue devices, and I'm looking to add smart plugs and a security camera. My main goal is to create some basic automation, like having the lights turn on at sunset, but I don't want to rely on a cloud connection for everything to work locally. For those who have a more advanced setup, what's the best central hub or platform to ensure everything works together reliably? I'm particularly concerned about privacy and whether I should avoid certain brands known for poor data practices.
Think of a local-first hub ecosystem. Run Home Assistant on a small PC or Raspberry Pi with a Zigbee/Z-Wave bridge to cover lights, plugs, sensors, and cameras, keeping core automations online without cloud. If you want simpler, Hubitat Elevation runs locally and supports Matter devices. Avoid cloud-only control for essential tasks to protect privacy.
Privacy note: prioritize devices with true local control or clear, opt-in cloud features. Review data-sharing settings in apps, and avoid brands with aggressive data collection or weak update practices.
Compatibility tip: ensure your hub supports Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Matter; plan for Hue and Nest without making them absolutely dependent on cloud; future devices will be easier to drop in.
Starter plan: hub + dongle, a couple plugs, one camera; map sunset lighting, simple schedules, and security alerts; test reliability for a week before expanding.
