Full Version: How long should I wait to install PS5 firmware updates and back up saves locally?

I've been holding off on installing the latest PS5 firmware update because of the horror stories I've read online about consoles bricking or losing data. My system has been running perfectly fine on the previous version, and I don't want to risk breaking it just for some minor feature additions I might not even use. At the same time, I'm worried about missing out on important stability patches or security fixes. For those who are more cautious with updates, how long do you typically wait before installing a new PS5 firmware update? Is there a reliable way to check if the major bugs have been ironed out, or a best practice for backing up saves locally before taking the plunge? I'd rather be safe than sorry.
Smart plan. Before updating, back up your PS5 data to USB using Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5, then select what to save. Check your current version in Settings > System > System Software > Console Information and read the official patch notes before you install. If you can, wait 24–48 hours to hear about any early bugs, and consider using Safe Mode if you need to troubleshoot after an update (Rebuild Database is a non-destructive option). citeturn0search0turn0search5
History shows updates can introduce issues; for example, a 2024 update targeting Final Fantasy XVI had follow-ups to fix crashes and graphical glitches. If you're risk-averse, give it a couple days and rely on patch notes and community reports before installing. citeturn0news12
Backup is practical: keep a USB backup of saves and data you care about; the PS5 data backup feature is straightforward, and it's worth doing before any upgrade. citeturn0search0
After updating, test with a couple of apps and a game or two in offline mode, and if anything acts up, use Safe Mode options like Rebuild Database or Initialize PS5 if necessary. citeturn0search5
Alternatively, if the update's new features aren’t essential, you can skip this release and wait for notes showing solid fixes in a later version.
