I just finished Elden Ring and now I have that empty feeling where no other game seems appealing. I'm looking for recommendations for the best open-world games that offer a deep sense of exploration and discovery, not just a huge map filled with repetitive icons. I've already played through the recent Zelda titles, The Witcher 3, and Red Dead Redemption 2. I prefer games where the world feels alive and rewards curiosity, with a strong atmosphere and meaningful side content. I'm open to any platform, including older titles I might have missed. What are your absolute favorites that truly nail the feeling of getting lost in another world?
Great set to chase that Elden Ring vibe. Skyrim gives a sprawling, living world with emergent quests. The Outer Wilds rewards curiosity with real mysteries. Subnautica nails atmosphere and discovery underwater. No Man’s Sky (post-launch fixes) and Starfield offer vast sandbox exploration across planets and systems. Sable leans mood-first and rewards exploration over icons.
Morrowind or Gothic 2 scratch that itch for non-linear exploration with sparse UI, but be prepared for clunkier interfaces.
Starfield and No Man’s Sky can demand time and decent hardware, but they deliver endless worlds to lose yourself in and a sense of scale.
Tell me your platform and what vibe you want—mystery, survival, or high fantasy—and I can tailor a tighter list.
