Full Version: Is a four-stroke worth it over a used two-stroke for an 18-foot center console?

I'm looking to repower my 18-foot center console fishing boat and I'm stuck between a new four-stroke outboard motor and a more affordable used two-stroke model. My old Mercury two-stroke finally gave out after fifteen years, and while it was loud and smoky, it was incredibly simple and reliable. I do a mix of inshore trolling and occasional runs to near-offshore reefs, so fuel efficiency and reliability are my top concerns. The price difference is significant, but I've heard the newer four-strokes are much heavier. For those who have made a similar switch, was the added cost and weight of a four-stroke worth it in terms of fuel savings and overall performance? I'm specifically looking at the Yamaha and Suzuki lines in the 90 to 115 horsepower range.
Nice project For an 18 ft center console a new four stroke will usually be heavier and pricier but it tends to run quieter smoother and use less fuel over time A used two stroke is cheaper but older tech can require more maintenance and higher fuel use When comparing Yamaha and Suzuki in the 90 to 115 hp range look at weight torque and how the prop is matched If possible test both on your boat and compare long term costs
Weight matters on a small hull so run a side by side test If you troll often a light two stroke can feel lively but modern fours are more reliable and easier to service
Also factor resale and dealer support and check the maintenance intervals and parts availability in your area That can swing the decision toward one brand
Check local dealers for test options and ask about weights spare parts and winter storage plans so you know what to expect once you commit to a repower
