I'm seriously considering buying an electric vehicle, but I'm hesitant because of the electric vehicle charging infrastructure in my area. I live in a suburban apartment complex that doesn't have any dedicated charging stations, and my assigned parking spot is far from any electrical outlet. My daily commute is about 50 miles round trip, and there are a few public fast-chargers near my office, but I'm worried about relying solely on them, especially in the winter. For current EV owners without home charging, how manageable has it been? Do you plan your week around charging stops, and has the public network been reliable enough for your needs? I'm trying to decide if this is a deal-breaker or just an adjustment.
Sounds like a real life test for EVs in a suburban setup. With a fifty mile daily round trip and no home charger the plan hinges on access. Talk to your building about a Level 2 charger or a shared station and see if your office or nearby business offers it. Winter cuts range so precondition the battery and keep a buffer of about ten to twenty miles. Don’t rely on fast chargers alone map a couple solid routes and stay flexible.
That makes sense you will rely on more than public chargers so it helps to talk with your building or workplace about a charging spot and make a simple weekly route plan.
I was in a similar spot and found it doable by charging at work most days and using a couple reliable public stations for tougher weeks with a little planning it becomes second nature.
Public networks can be flaky so have a clear fallback such as a hybrid option or a backup car for winter until you lock in a home charger.
If you want more targeted help share your city and the charger networks you can access and I can sketch a practical weekly plan.
