My car's check engine light came on and now it's making a weird rattling noise, I was just driving home from work yesterday and the light popped on, and now there's this metallic rattling sound coming from the front passenger side whenever I go over a bump or accelerate. It's a 2018 sedan with about 80k miles. I'm worried it's something serious with the suspension or maybe a heat shield came loose. I have a basic OBD2 scanner but the code it gave me was super generic. I'm not sure if I should take it to my usual mechanic or just to a dealership for a diagnostic.
That sounds rough and worrisome with the check engine light on and a rattling noise. Heat shields can rattle when loose. citeturn0search0turn0search2
Could be a loose heat shield or a worn suspension part, but it could also be a sensor or exhaust issue. A quick diagnostic is wise. citeturn0search0turn0search4
I had a similar rattling heat shield after a long drive and a quick clamp fixed it. Not always easy to spot but heat shield fixes are common. citeturn0search0turn0search2
Best move is to book a diagnostic soon with a trusted shop or dealership, and don’t ignore the check engine light. citeturn0search0turn0search4
