My - check engine light came on but the car seems fine

My - check engine light came on yesterday out of nowhere. The car is driving totally normally, no weird sounds or loss of power. I'm not due for an oil change or anything. I'm worried it's something expensive but I also don't want to pay a mechanic a hundred bucks just to tell me it's a loose gas cap. It's a 2015 sedan with about 80k miles.
First off don’t panic. A steady check engine light on a 2015 sedan with 80k miles is common and often cheap to diagnose. Start with an OBD II scanner to pull the engine fault codes. If the gas cap was loose that can trigger it and is a cheap fix. If you can’t borrow one many auto parts shops read codes for free for a quick car diagnostics session.
Next steps are simple. Get the codes then decide. If the code points to something minor like an evap leak from a loose cap fix it and clear the code. If it points to a misfire or sensor fault you may need a pro to check spark plugs sensors or the catalytic converter. The goal is not to guess from how the car feels.
A flashing light means stop driving and get it checked fast. A steady light can wait but not forever.
When you read codes note the exact code and description then google it with your car year to understand typical causes and costs. Also consider clearing the code after you address the issue to see if it comes back.
If you want tell me the code you get and I will help interpret it and sketch a quick plan for the next steps and rough costs.
