Where to start with - art history as a hobbyist

I've gotten really into visiting museums and want to learn some - art history to understand what I'm looking at. But every book or documentary starts with cave paintings and it's a huge slog to get to the periods I'm actually interested in, like Impressionism. I just want a way to learn about specific movements without getting a whole degree. It's hard to know what's worth reading.
You're not alone. Start with a movement first plan. Pick one or two movements you care about and read a quick overview. Use free sources like Smarthistory and museum timelines to anchor yourself.
Build a tiny reading list with one movement overview a short essay and a gallery page for a key work Then compare what you see with the movement labels.
Focus on famous works first Look at Monet in Impressionism or Goya in Romanticism See how color light and composition signal the movement.
Use a visual timeline approach An art history timeline helps connect dates places and styles without a degree Pick a couple of milestones.
Want a starter plan Tell me which movements you like and how much time you have I can map a simple four week plan with readings and activities.
