Writing community guidelines without sounding like a dictator
I'm setting up a forum for a hobby group and need to write some community guidelines. I want to keep things friendly but I also need rules to stop arguments. Every example I find online is either way too corporate or super vague. I don't want to be the rule police, but I've seen other groups fall apart without any structure. It's a weird balance.
Great goal keeping it friendly yet firm Start with three core values like respect curiosity and inclusivity Then write a short code of conduct in plain language that explains how to disagree how to post and how to ask for moderator help Use concrete examples not legal jargon and invite tweaks The guidelines should connect to the moderation policy and the privacy policy so people see the guardrails without feeling policed
Keep it simple at first Let the community guidelines be a living document you revisit with the group a few times a year This keeps you from over complicating and invites feedback
Offer a starter template that includes a welcome message three core rules and a note on how moderation works Then invite people to comment and propose changes so they feel ownership and you avoid sounding harsh
Test in practice for a short period If conversations spiral restructure the wording add examples and keep the tone warm
When you publish the rules present them as a community guidelines contract not a set of demands Mention the code of conduct at onboarding and reference the moderation policies and privacy policy so people understand the boundaries
