I understand that combining quantum mechanics and general relativity into a theory of quantum gravity is one of the biggest challenges in physics. What are the main quantum gravity theories being pursued? I've heard about string theory, loop quantum gravity, and others. How do these approaches differ? What are their strengths and weaknesses? And how close are we to having a complete theory of quantum gravity?
