Full Version: How does quantum tunneling work?

Quantum tunneling seems like magic to me. How can a particle pass through a barrier that it shouldn't have enough energy to cross? I've heard quantum tunneling explained as the particle having a probability of being on the other side, but that doesn't really clarify how it happens. What's the actual mechanism behind quantum tunneling? Are there practical applications of quantum tunneling that we use today?
