I keep hearing about string theory but I'm having trouble understanding the basics. From what I gather, it proposes that fundamental particles aren't points but tiny vibrating strings. But what does that actually mean? How does string theory differ from standard particle physics? What are the extra dimensions it requires, and why do we need them? I'm looking for a string theory basics explanation that doesn't require advanced math. Also, how does it relate to quantum gravity theories?
