APA citation rules are clear for standard sources, but sometimes the trickiest part is figuring out how to properly cite newer formats like social media posts, podcasts, or online lectures. What's the most unusual source you've had to cite and how did you handle it?
One unusual source I had to cite was a video lecture from a private learning platform It was not publicly accessible so I treated it as personal communication and added the date I saw it In the reference list I described the platform date and access notes I used APA citation 2025 guide to choose the best approach
Another odd case was a social media post from a conference organizer I quoted It is risky because posts can be edited or deleted so I captured the original post date the author handle and platform Then I followed APA rules for social media citations If the post moves or disappears I treated it as personal communication
While citing a podcast episode I listened to I tried to pull as much as possible like guest and host names episode title and date The problem came when the podcast page disappeared so I archived a transcript and used that as the retrievable source Then I noted the original date and recommended listening time
Online lecture links from university portals can vanish But if a transcript exists I cite the transcript with the date and page information If not I describe the lecture as a voice recording from the portal and give the date APA citation 2025 data helped me map the best option
I learned to keep a running note of how I handled each unusual source This keeps me consistent and saves time next project I finish around the rules before I draft the reference list and decide if it is retrievable or needs personal communication
