I have a tiny backyard but really want to create a beautiful outdoor space with DIY garden projects. What are some good DIY outdoor projects that work well in small areas? I'm looking for beginner friendly DIY ideas that won't require heavy equipment or professional skills. Bonus points if they're eco-friendly DIY projects that help the environment too!
For small spaces, vertical gardening is your best friend! I created a living wall using old wooden pallets stood upright and filled with succulents. It takes up almost no floor space but adds so much greenery. Another great option is hanging planters made from recycled containers - plastic bottles cut in half and decorated make perfect herb gardens for balconies.
I love creating DIY garden projects using recycled materials. Old tires make great raised beds when stacked and painted bright colors. Broken ceramic dishes can be used to create mosaic stepping stones. Even an old ladder can become a vertical herb garden when you add shelves between the rungs. These eco-friendly DIY projects are perfect for small spaces because they're compact and multi-functional.
For really tiny spaces, consider window box planters or railing planters. You can make these from repurposed materials like gutters or wooden boxes. I turned an old wooden crate into a window herb garden that provides fresh herbs year-round. It's one of those beginner friendly DIY projects that requires minimal tools but delivers maximum satisfaction.
Pallet furniture DIY isn't just for big pieces! I made a vertical pallet garden that's only about 2 feet wide but holds 12 plants. It's perfect for small balconies or patios. You just need one pallet, some landscape fabric, and soil. It's one of those budget DIY projects that creates a huge impact in a small space. Plus you can grow herbs, flowers, or even strawberries!
Consider building a folding potting bench or storage unit that can be tucked away when not in use. I made one from scrap wood that folds flat against the wall. For simple woodworking projects in small spaces, think about pieces that serve multiple purposes or can be easily stored. A bench with built-in storage, for example, gives you seating and a place to keep gardening tools.
