I believe fit is everything when it comes to looking expensive. What affordable tailoring tips do you swear by? Also, which cheap fabrics that look expensive are worth investing in? I'm trying to learn how to make budget pieces look custom-made. Any advice on budget fashion investment pieces that are worth getting tailored?
My number one affordable tailoring tip is learning to hem pants. It's so easy and makes everything look custom. You can buy pants that fit in the waist and hips, then hem them to the perfect length. It costs like $10 if you take them to a tailor, or you can learn to do it yourself. That one change makes cheap pants look expensive.
For cheap fabrics that look expensive, I love ponte knit. It has that luxe feel, drapes beautifully, and is actually really affordable. Also, certain polyester blends can look amazing if they have good weight and structure. The key is avoiding thin, shiny polyester that looks cheap. Look for matte finishes and substantial weight.
Taking in the waist of dresses and tops is another game-changer. So many clothes are boxy or don't fit quite right off the rack. A simple waist adjustment makes them look custom-made. I consider tailoring part of the cost of any budget fashion investment pieces. Spending $20 to tailor a $50 dress makes it look like a $200 dress.
Sleeve adjustments on blazers and coats make a huge difference. Most off-the-rack sleeves are too long. Getting them shortened to show just a bit of shirt cuff looks so polished and expensive. It's one of those details that people notice even if they can't quite say why. That's my favorite affordable tailoring tip for looking expensive on a budget.
Learning basic sewing skills has saved me so much money. Even just being able to replace buttons, fix loose hems, and take in seams means I can buy cheaper clothes and make them look expensive. YouTube has amazing tutorials for all of this. It's one of the best budget fashion hacks out there.
