Hulu has some amazing original content that often gets overshadowed by Netflix and HBO. I feel like there are so many underappreciated Hulu originals that never got the attention they deserved. What Hulu originals have you watched that were surprisingly good but didn't seem to get much buzz? I'm looking for those hidden gems that maybe didn't have big stars or massive marketing campaigns but delivered excellent storytelling.
For underappreciated Hulu originals, The Handmaid's Tale early seasons were incredible though it declined later. Those first two seasons are some of the best television ever made. Also Ramy - comedy-drama about a first-generation Egyptian-American Muslim that's funny, thoughtful, and beautifully made. And Pen15 - cringe comedy about middle school in the early 2000s that's both hilarious and painfully accurate.
The Great is Hulu's most underappreciated original. Historical comedy that's smarter and funnier than it has any right to be. Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult have incredible chemistry. Also Only Murders in the Building - yes it's popular but still underrated for how well it balances mystery, comedy, and character drama. Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez are perfect together.
Reservation Dogs is arguably the best underappreciated Hulu original currently airing. Comedy-drama about Indigenous teens in Oklahoma that's funny, heartfelt, and culturally specific in the best way. Also The Bear - yes it's getting buzz now but when it first dropped it was definitely underappreciated. Kitchen drama that's intense and emotional.
What We Do in the Shadows is consistently brilliant and still underappreciated compared to how funny it is. Mockumentary about vampire roommates that gets better every season. Also The Orville started on Fox but moved to Hulu - it's actually a great Star Trek homage with heart and humor. And Letterkenny if you count it as Hulu original - Canadian comedy that's incredibly fast-paced and clever.
Dopesick is an underappreciated Hulu original limited series about the opioid crisis with incredible performances from Michael Keaton and Kaitlyn Dever. Devastating but important. Also The Dropout - Amanda Seyfried's portrayal of Elizabeth Holmes is phenomenal. And Pam & Tommy - surprisingly thoughtful drama about the Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee sex tape scandal.
Shrill was a great underappreciated Hulu original that ended too soon. Aidy Bryant's comedy about body positivity and journalism was funny and smart. Also High Fidelity reboot with Zoƫ Kravitz - cancelled after one season but it was really good. And Love, Victor - spin-off of Love, Simon that's sweet and well-done teen drama.
