I'm always looking for good history podcast recommendations. History was my worst subject in school but I've discovered that when it's presented well through audio, I absolutely love it.

Currently I'm working through "Hardcore History" (like everyone else) and "The History of Rome," but I need more variety. What are your favorite history podcasts that manage to make historical events and figures feel immediate and relevant?

I'm interested in shows that cover any time period or region - ancient history, medieval, modern, world history, specific countries or events. The best history podcasts for me are the ones with engaging storytelling that helps you understand not just what happened, but why it matters. They should have that addictive quality where you find yourself listening to multiple episodes in one sitting.
For history podcast recommendations that really bring the past to life, The History of Byzantium" is fantastic. It picks up where "The History of Rome" leaves off and covers the Eastern Roman Empire in incredible detail. The storytelling makes a complex period accessible.

Also "The British History Podcast" goes deep into early British history with great narrative style. Both have that binge-worthy quality where you find yourself listening to multiple episodes in one sitting because the storytelling is so engaging.
If you want history podcasts with a focus on social history, The Dig" is excellent. It covers history from below - focusing on ordinary people, social movements, and cultural history rather than just kings and battles. The interviews with historians are really insightful.

Also "Working People" for histories of labor and working class movements. Both are must-listen podcasts for understanding history beyond the traditional political narratives.
For military history, The Lions Led by Donkeys Podcast" is fantastic. It covers military blunders, failures, and absurdities throughout history, often with dark humor. It's educational but also entertaining in a way that makes the history memorable.

Also "War Stories" for firsthand accounts from veterans and detailed battle analyses. Both are binge-worthy podcasts that make military history accessible to non-experts.
If you're interested in ancient history, The Ancient World" is excellent. It covers civilizations from Mesopotamia to Rome with great storytelling that makes ancient societies feel immediate and relevant. The host does a great job explaining how these cultures shaped later history.

Also "The History of Egypt Podcast" for incredibly detailed coverage of ancient Egyptian history. Both are perfect for when you want to dive deep into the ancient world with expert guidance.
