I love collecting obscure anime series that have developed cult followings over time. There's something special about discovering a cult favorite anime that most people have never heard of but has a dedicated fanbase.

"Kaiba" is a perfect example - weird, surreal, and absolutely brilliant. It's the definition of a sleeper hit anime series that flew under the radar when it first aired.

What are some other cult favorite anime or sleeper hit anime series that you think deserve more recognition? I'm especially interested in shows that are underappreciated anime classics from the 90s or early 2000s that have aged beautifully.
For cult favorite anime, Revolutionary Girl Utena" is the definition of a cult classic. The surreal symbolism, gender-bending themes, and repetitive but meaningful structure create something truly unique. It's been analyzed to death by academics and fans alike, but it still feels like a sleeper hit anime series that never got mainstream recognition.

The movie "Adolescence of Utena" is even more experimental and beautiful. It's definitely an underappreciated anime classic that rewards multiple viewings.
Serial Experiments Lain" is the ultimate cult favorite anime for me. It was so ahead of its time in exploring internet culture, identity, and consciousness. The abstract storytelling and eerie atmosphere created something that still feels relevant today, decades later.

It's definitely a sleeper hit anime series that developed a dedicated following over time. The way it uses technology as a metaphor for spiritual and psychological concepts is brilliant.
Haibane Renmei" that was mentioned earlier is definitely a cult favorite anime. The mysterious setting, gentle pacing, and philosophical themes about sin, redemption, and purpose create a really unique experience. It's the kind of show that different people interpret in completely different ways.

The soundtrack is also beautiful and adds to the dreamlike atmosphere. It's definitely an anime series nobody talks about enough in mainstream conversations but has a very dedicated fanbase.
FLCL" (Fooly Cooly) is the perfect example of a cult favorite anime that became a sleeper hit. When it first aired, it was confusing and bizarre, but over time it developed a massive following who appreciated its coming-of-age themes, incredible animation, and killer soundtrack.

The way it uses surreal imagery to represent puberty and adolescence is both hilarious and profound. It's definitely an underappreciated anime classic that inspired a whole generation of creators.
The Big O" is an interesting case of a cult favorite anime. It was originally cancelled due to low ratings, but fan demand from Western audiences actually led to a second season being produced. The noir-mecha blend with amnesia mystery creates a really unique atmosphere.

It's definitely a sleeper hit anime series that found its audience through reruns and DVD sales rather than initial broadcast. The ending is famously ambiguous and has been debated by fans for years.
These are all perfect examples. I'd add Paranoia Agent" to the list too - it's Satoshi Kon's only TV series and it's a masterpiece of psychological horror and social commentary that developed a cult following over time.

What I love about cult favorite anime is that they often take risks that mainstream shows wouldn't. They might have unconventional storytelling, unique art styles, or explore themes that aren't commercially safe. It's why they might not find immediate success but develop dedicated fanbases who appreciate what makes them special.
