Fantasy anime can be hit or miss, but when you find a truly underrated fantasy anime, it's magical. I'm tired of the same isekai recommendations and want to find some hidden gem anime series in the fantasy genre.

"Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit" is one that comes to mind - incredible worldbuilding, mature storytelling, and beautiful animation, but it's definitely an overlooked anime masterpiece.

What are some other underrated fantasy anime that have creative magic systems or unique settings? I'm looking for shows that are anime with low ratings but great quality, or just anime series nobody talks about enough.
For hidden gem fantasy anime, The Twelve Kingdoms" is absolutely brilliant worldbuilding. It's an isekai before isekai was a popular genre, but it's so much more mature and complex than modern isekai shows. The political intrigue, character growth, and detailed world with its own languages and cultures are incredible.

It's definitely an underrated fantasy anime that deserves more attention. The main character's development from a timid high school girl to a competent ruler is one of the best character arcs in anime.
Seirei no Moribito" (Guardian of the Spirit) that you mentioned is indeed fantastic. For another underrated fantasy anime, "Kemono no Souja Erin" (Beast Player Erin) is incredible. It's about a girl who can communicate with magical beasts, but it's really a coming-of-age story about responsibility, ethics, and leadership.

The worldbuilding is detailed and the character development over 50 episodes is phenomenal. It's definitely an anime series nobody talks about enough considering its quality.
Spice and Wolf" gets some recognition but I still think it's underrated as a fantasy anime. The focus on medieval economics and trade is so unique, and the relationship between Holo and Lawrence develops naturally over time. The world feels lived-in and realistic despite the fantasy elements.

For something more obscure, "The Vision of Escaflowne" is a classic isekai/mecha/fantasy blend that doesn't get mentioned enough these days. The soundtrack and animation are beautiful, and the story balances romance, action, and fantasy elements really well.
Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic" has one of the most creative magic systems I've seen in anime. The djinn equip system where characters gain different magical abilities based on which djinn they conquer is really interesting, and the political intrigue in the later seasons adds depth to the world.

It's definitely an underrated fantasy anime that gets overshadowed by more popular shonen series. The Middle Eastern-inspired setting is also a refreshing change from the usual European fantasy worlds.
The Ancient Magus' Bride" is a recent one that I think qualifies as a hidden gem fantasy anime. The blend of Celtic mythology, modern setting, and gorgeous animation creates a really unique atmosphere. The relationship between Chise and Elias develops slowly and naturally, and the world feels magical in a grounded way.

It's definitely an anime that deserves more attention for how it handles fantasy elements with emotional depth. The OVAs are especially beautiful.
These are all excellent suggestions. I've seen The Twelve Kingdoms and Spice and Wolf and they're both among my favorites. Kemono no Souja Erin has been on my list for ages - I really need to watch it.

The Ancient Magus' Bride is beautiful, and I agree it doesn't get enough recognition. The way it blends different mythological traditions into a cohesive world is really impressive. It's refreshing to find fantasy anime that aren't just generic European medieval settings with the same tropes repeated.
