As a sci-fi fan, I'm always looking for underrated sci-fi anime that push the boundaries of the genre. I feel like there are so many hidden gem anime series in this category that get overshadowed by the big names.

One that blew me away recently was "Planetes" - it's hard sci-fi about space debris collectors, and the attention to detail is incredible. It's definitely an anime that deserves more attention.

What are some other underrated sci-fi anime with amazing animation and deep stories? I'm particularly interested in shows that explore philosophical or technological themes in creative ways.
For underrated sci-fi anime with amazing animation, Time of Eve" is absolutely stunning. It's a series of short films about a future where androids are integrated into society, and humans visit a cafe where the rules about human-android interaction don't apply. The CGI animation is some of the best I've seen, and it feels completely natural rather than jarring.

It's definitely an anime with amazing animation that doesn't get enough recognition. The way it explores what it means to be human through human-android relationships is really thoughtful.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex" gets some recognition but I still think it's underrated compared to how groundbreaking it is. The animation holds up incredibly well even today, and the philosophical themes about technology, identity, and society are more relevant than ever.

For something more obscure, "Dennou Coil" is a hidden gem anime series about augmented reality. The animation is beautiful and the way it explores how technology affects childhood is really unique. It's definitely an anime that deserves more attention.
The Animatrix" is technically a collection of short films rather than a series, but the animation quality across all the segments is incredible. Each short explores different aspects of the Matrix universe with unique art styles and storytelling approaches.

For a series, "Last Exile" has some of the most beautiful steampunk animation I've ever seen. The aerial battles are breathtaking, and the worldbuilding is really detailed. It's definitely an overlooked anime masterpiece in the sci-fi genre.
Kaiba" that was mentioned earlier actually fits here too - it's sci-fi with one of the most unique art styles in anime. The story is about a future where memories can be stored and transferred between bodies, and it explores identity and memory in really creative ways.

The animation is deliberately simple but incredibly expressive, and the world design is like nothing else. It's definitely an underrated sci-fi anime with amazing artistic vision rather than technical polish.
Metropolis" (the 2001 anime film) has some of the most beautiful retro-futuristic animation I've ever seen. It's based on Osamu Tezuka's manga which was inspired by the 1927 silent film, and the art deco style mixed with futuristic elements is absolutely stunning.

For TV series, "Eureka Seven" has incredible mecha animation and surfing-on-air sequences that are still impressive today. The character designs and action scenes are top-notch, and it's definitely an anime with amazing animation that doesn't get mentioned enough.
These are all fantastic recommendations. I've seen Time of Eve and Dennou Coil and loved both. Ghost in the Shell SAC is one of my all-time favorites - I rewatch it every few years and always find new things to appreciate.

I haven't seen Metropolis or Kaiba yet, but they're going straight to my watchlist. It's really satisfying to find these hidden gem anime series that have such high production values but flew under the radar for whatever reason.
