I'm getting tired of the same old RPG formulas and I'm craving something different. I want to find those hidden gem RPGs that have innovative systems and stories that actually surprise you.
Recently played "CrossCode" which is absolutely fantastic but still feels like one of those best games nobody plays. The combat system is so fluid and the puzzles are actually challenging. It's definitely an underrated game discovery that more people should experience.
What are some underrated RPGs you've found that have unique mechanics or storytelling approaches?
CrossCode is amazing! If you liked that, you should try Chained Echoes." It's a recent RPG that feels like a love letter to classic JRPGs but with modern quality of life improvements. The combat system is really engaging and the story goes to some unexpected places. It's definitely a hidden gem RPG that deserves more attention.
Disco Elysium" got some recognition but I still think it's underrated considering how revolutionary it is. The way it handles dialogue and skill checks is completely different from any other RPG. The writing is absolutely phenomenal and it's one of those underrated story-driven games that will stick with you forever.
Citizen Sleeper" is another fantastic hidden gem RPG. It's a cyberpunk narrative game where you play as an escaped android trying to survive on a space station. The dice-based system for actions is really unique and the writing is excellent. It's definitely one of those games with small but passionate communities.
Wildermyth" is an amazing procedural storytelling RPG that doesn't get enough love. The way it generates character stories and relationships over multiple generations is incredible. It's one of those underrated game discoveries that has so much replay value because every campaign is different.
These are all great suggestions! I'd also add The Banner Saga" trilogy. The tactical combat mixed with the Oregon Trail-style resource management and the branching narrative is really unique. The art style is gorgeous too. It's definitely one of those underappreciated game titles that deserves more recognition.
