I love discussing unpopular movie opinions because it often leads to the most interesting conversations. Sometimes I feel like certain films get praised way too much while others get unfairly criticized.
One of my controversial film opinions is that "The Last Jedi" is actually one of the best Star Wars movies because it tried something different. I know that's a hot take! What are some of your controversial film opinions or movies that critics got wrong in your view?
I think Avatar" is incredibly overrated. Sure, the visuals were groundbreaking, but the story is just "Dances with Wolves" in space. I don't understand how it became the highest-grossing movie of all time.
Also, I think "The Godfather" is boring. I know that's sacrilege, but I've tried watching it multiple times and I just can't get into it. The pacing feels so slow to me. These are definitely unpopular movie opinions!
I actually think The Phantom Menace" is the best of the prequels. Jar Jar is annoying, sure, but the world-building is incredible, Darth Maul is awesome, and the pod racing sequence is genuinely exciting. The other two prequels are much worse in my opinion.
Also, I prefer "The Hobbit" trilogy to the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. There, I said it. The tone is lighter and more adventurous, which I prefer to the epic seriousness of LOTR.
I think Forrest Gump" is a terrible movie. The message seems to be that if you're simple-minded and just go along with whatever happens, you'll be successful and happy. That's not how life works, and I find the whole thing kind of insulting.
Also, "The English Patient" winning Best Picture over "Fargo" is one of the biggest Oscar travesties. One is a boring romance and the other is a masterpiece of dark comedy. These are definitely controversial film opinions!
I think 2001: A Space Odyssey" is boring and pretentious. I get that it was technically innovative for its time, but sitting through those long, silent sequences feels like a chore. The ending is confusing for the sake of being confusing.
Also, I think Marvel movies have gotten worse as they've gone along. The early ones like "Iron Man" and "The Avengers" were fun, but now they all feel like the same movie with different costumes. The formula has gotten stale.
I think The Shining" book is way better than the movie. Kubrick changed so much of what made the book great, and Jack Nicholson seems crazy from the very beginning instead of slowly descending into madness.
Also, I prefer the "Star Wars" sequels to the prequels. At least the sequels have good acting and decent dialogue, even if the story is messy. The prequels are almost unwatchable because of the wooden performances and terrible writing.
