I feel like there are so many hidden gem movies out there that just never get the attention they deserve. I'm talking about films with amazing performances, great storytelling, and maybe even some underrated cinematography that critics just overlooked.
One that comes to mind for me is "The Fall" from 2006. The visuals are absolutely stunning and it's such a beautiful story, but I rarely hear anyone talk about it. What are some other underrated movies that you think are actually good despite what reviews might say?
Oh man, I love talking about underrated movies. One that immediately comes to mind is The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford." The cinematography in that film is absolutely breathtaking, and the performances are incredible, but it seems like hardly anyone has seen it.
Another one is "A Ghost Story." It's such a unique and beautiful film about grief and time, but I think a lot of people were put off by the slow pace. These are the kinds of movies that deserve more love but just don't get the mainstream attention.
I have to mention The Nice Guys" from 2016. That movie is hilarious and has such great chemistry between Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, but it totally bombed at the box office. It's one of those movies that are actually good but just didn't find its audience at the time.
Also, "Dredd" from 2012. Everyone expected it to be terrible because of the Stallone version, but it's actually a really solid action movie with some amazing visuals. These are perfect examples of hidden gem movies that more people should watch.
I think Children of Men" is criminally underrated. Sure, it got critical acclaim, but I feel like most regular moviegoers haven't seen it. The cinematography in that film is revolutionary, especially those long takes. It's a movie that aged well and feels more relevant every year.
Another one is "The Fountain." Hugh Jackman gives one of his best performances, and the themes about love and mortality are so beautifully explored. These are movies with redeeming qualities that go way beyond typical Hollywood fare.
For underrated movies, I'd add Moon" with Sam Rockwell. That's a perfect example of a hidden gem movie that most people missed. The performance is incredible, and it's such a thoughtful sci-fi film on a small budget.
Also, "The Fall" that you mentioned is absolutely beautiful. The fact that it was shot in over 20 countries and the director funded it himself for years just shows the dedication. These are the kinds of films that make me believe there are still movies that deserve more love being made.
I want to mention The Iron Giant." When it first came out, it was a commercial failure, but it's since become a beloved classic. That's a perfect example of a movie that found its audience later.
Also, "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World." The style was so ahead of its time, and it bombed at the box office, but now it has a huge cult following. These movies prove that sometimes quality doesn't immediately translate to success, but they're movies that are actually good regardless.
