I'm working on some personal animation projects just for fun, nothing professional. I'm looking for free 2D animation software that's actually usable. I don't need all the fancy features, just something that lets me create simple animations without watermarks or major limitations. I've seen a lot of options but they either have hidden costs or are way too complicated. Any suggestions for free digital animation software that's good for small projects?
For small projects, I really like using Pencil2D. It's lightweight, simple, and doesn't have any watermarks or export limitations. The interface is straightforward so you can focus on animating rather than figuring out complicated menus. It's perfect for quick animations or learning the basics. The only downside is it's not great for complex scenes with lots of layers, but for small personal projects it works perfectly.
Wick Editor is my go to for quick browser based animations. Since it runs in your browser, there's nothing to install and you can work from any computer. It's great for simple vector animations and has some interactive features that are fun to play with. The export options are decent too. For animation software for small projects where you just want to create something quickly without dealing with installation or complex settings, it's hard to beat.
I've been using OpenToonz for my personal projects and it's surprisingly capable for free software. The learning curve is a bit steep but once you get the basics down, you can create some pretty nice animations. The community has created a lot of tutorials and resources too. It handles bitmap and vector animation, has camera tools, and decent effects. For free digital animation software, it's definitely worth the time to learn.
Don't forget about Blender's Grease Pencil for 2D animation. It's part of Blender so it's completely free, and it's actually really powerful. You can create 2D animations with 3D camera moves, which is pretty cool. The downside is you have to learn Blender basics first, which can be overwhelming. But if you're willing to put in the time, it's an amazing tool that can grow with you as your skills improve.
