Creating realistic orchestral arrangements with free tools is challenging but possible. What free virtual instrument plugins do you use for orchestral work? I'm talking about strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion - the whole ensemble. Some free orchestral VST plugins are surprisingly detailed. What's your experience with building orchestral templates using only free instruments? Any particular libraries that stand out?

For free virtual instrument plugins for orchestral work, the BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover is amazing for being free. Project SAM has some free orchestral instruments too. These free orchestral VST plugins won't replace expensive libraries, but they're great for learning and sketching ideas. With good programming, you can get surprisingly realistic results.
