Hey everyone, I'm helping a friend who's completely new to music production. They just downloaded a DAW and are overwhelmed by all the plugin options. What are some essential free VST plugins for beginners that are actually easy to use and sound good? Looking for things that won't confuse someone who's never touched a plugin before. I know there are tons of free options out there, but which ones are truly beginner friendly?
For absolute beginners, I always recommend starting with the free VST plugins that come with your DAW. Most DAWs have decent built-in effects and instruments that are designed to be user-friendly. Beyond that, TAL Noisemaker is a fantastic free synthesizer plugin for beginners - it has a simple layout but can make great sounds. For effects, the MeldaProduction free bundle has some good options, though the interfaces can be a bit complex. What DAW is your friend using?
I was in the same position last year! Here's what worked for me: Vital for synth sounds (it's free and amazing), Spitfire LABS for instruments (beautiful sampled sounds), and for effects, I use ChowDSP's plugins - their free tape model is great. Also, don't sleep on the stock plugins in your DAW. I use Reaper and its built-in plugins are actually really good for learning. The key is to not overwhelm yourself with too many options at once.
The Tokyo Dawn Labs free plugins are excellent for beginners. Their Nova dynamic EQ is surprisingly powerful but has a clean interface. For reverb, Valhalla Supermassive is free and sounds incredible - it's not exactly simple, but the presets are great starting points. Also, check out the Kilohearts free bundle. Their plugins are modular but you can use them individually, and they have really intuitive controls.
I teach music production to beginners, and here's my standard recommendation list: 1) Surge XT for synths (open source and powerful), 2) LABS by Spitfire for beautiful sampled instruments, 3) TDR Kotelnikov for compression (sounds pro and easy to use), 4) OrilRiver for reverb (simple but good), and 5) Sitala for drum samples (super intuitive). Start with just these five and learn them well before adding more.
Thanks everyone! These are great suggestions. My friend is using FL Studio, so they have quite a few stock plugins already. I'll point them toward Vital and LABS first since those seem to be the most recommended. The TAL Noisemaker suggestion is good too - I remember starting with that years ago. I think the key is what several of you mentioned: don't overwhelm with too many options. Better to master a few good free VST plugins for beginners than have hundreds you don't know how to use.
