Motivation is one of the biggest challenges writers face. Initial excitement can carry you through the beginning of a project, but maintaining motivation through the middle and end requires different strategies.

I've tried various writing motivation strategies over the years - rewards, accountability, visualization - but what works for one project might not work for another. Some strategies feel gimmicky or lose their effectiveness over time.

What writing motivation strategies have you found sustainable for long-term projects? I'm looking for approaches that:

- Work through the "grind" phases of writing
- Help recover from setbacks or criticism
- Maintain enthusiasm over months or years
- Balance discipline with self-compassion
- Adapt to changing life circumstances

Some strategies I've used include breaking projects into smaller milestones, finding writing communities for support, and reminding myself of my "why" for each project. But I'm always looking for more effective writing motivation strategies.

What has helped you stay motivated through challenging writing projects, especially when external validation is scarce?
