I've written several novels, but I'm relatively new to short stories. I'm finding that many of my novel writing techniques don't translate well to the short form. Short stories require different approaches to pacing, character development, and plot structure.
What short story techniques have you found essential that differ from novel writing? I'm particularly interested in:
- How to establish character quickly without lengthy backstory
- Creating satisfying endings in limited space
- Choosing the right scope for a short story
- Balancing plot and theme in a condensed format
- Effective use of implication and subtext
Some short story techniques I've been experimenting with include starting closer to the climax, using a single defining moment to reveal character, and focusing on one central idea or theme. But I'm still learning.
What short story techniques have you developed that work specifically for this form? How do you approach the unique constraints and opportunities of short fiction compared to longer works?
