As a writing mentor, I'm always looking for effective creative writing exercises to recommend to writers at different skill levels. While some exercises are great for beginners, others are more useful for experienced writers looking to break out of ruts or develop specific skills.

I believe creative writing exercises should serve a purpose beyond just "writing something." They should help develop particular aspects of writing craft, whether it's dialogue, description, pacing, or voice.

What creative writing exercises have you found most valuable? I'm interested in exercises that:
- Target specific skills (like showing vs telling)
- Help overcome specific challenges (like writing natural dialogue)
- Spark creativity when you're stuck
- Develop consistency in voice or style
- Improve particular elements like setting or character

Some of my favorites include writing the same scene from multiple perspectives, or describing a character without mentioning their physical appearance. But I'm always looking for new creative writing exercises to add to my teaching toolkit.

What exercises have genuinely helped your writing craft improvement?
