Plot structure is something I've struggled with for years. I can come up with interesting characters and scenes, but weaving everything into a coherent, compelling plot is challenging.
I've read about various plot structure models - three-act structure, hero's journey, save the cat, etc. - but applying them to my own work feels forced sometimes. The plot structure advice that works for one type of story might not work for another.
What plot structure advice has been most helpful in your writing? I'm not necessarily looking for which model to follow, but rather how you approach plot structure in a way that serves your story rather than constrains it.
Some specific questions:
- How detailed should your outline be?
- When do you deviate from your planned structure?
- How do you balance plot with character development?
- What do you do when you realize your plot isn't working?
I'd love to hear about both the theory and practical application of plot structure advice.
