I've got a product idea but I want to validate it before sinking time and money into development. I've read about all these fancy market validation methods free but most seem theoretical. What market validation methods have you actually used that gave you real confidence (or lack thereof) in your idea? I'm looking for practical, actionable approaches that don't require a big budget.
For market validation methods free that actually work, I swear by the fake door" test. Create a landing page for your product with a signup button, but when people click it, say you're in private beta and collect their email instead. This validates interest without building anything. Just be ethical about it - don't take money, and follow up with people to explain it was a test.
One of the best market validation methods free I've used is simply talking to potential customers about their problems, not your solution. If you can get people to spend 30 minutes telling you about their frustrations in an area, and those frustrations align with what your product would solve, that's strong validation. Bonus: you often learn about adjacent problems you could solve too.
Check out the Wizard of Oz" validation method. Create the appearance of a working product (maybe with manual work behind the scenes) and see if people will use it. For example, if you're building an AI tool, you could manually do what the AI would do for a few test users. It's labor-intensive but gives you real validation before building the full system.
