I'm helping a friend launch a new product and we need to do some market entry analysis free because they're completely bootstrapped. I know the basics like looking at market size and competition, but I'm wondering about more sophisticated approaches that don't cost money. What methods have you used for market entry analysis that actually gave you useful insights without requiring expensive data subscriptions?
For market entry analysis free approaches, I always start with a simple SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) of the competitive landscape. It's basic but forces you to think systematically. Then I look at review sites for competitors - what are customers complaining about? What features do they wish existed? That's often where the real opportunities are hiding.
One method I've used for market entry analysis free is creating a competitive matrix." List all the competitors in the space, then list the key features/capabilities that matter to customers. Mark which competitors have which features. The gaps in the matrix often reveal opportunities. You can gather most of this information from competitor websites, free trials, and customer reviews.
Don't forget to analyze the business models of existing players. Are they subscription-based? Transaction fees? Advertising? Understanding how money flows in the industry can reveal opportunities for different pricing models or revenue streams. This is part of market entry analysis that often gets overlooked but can be a real competitive advantage if you spot an opening.
