I've been working on simplifying home organization for about two years now and honestly the biggest challenge for me has been physical clutter reduction. I feel like I'm constantly battling stuff that accumulates.

What practical methods have actually worked for you guys? I've tried the whole "one in, one out" rule but sometimes it feels like I'm just shuffling things around.

I'm really interested in hearing about systems that help maintain a simplified home long term, not just temporary cleanups.
For physical clutter reduction, what really helped me was implementing a seasonal review system. Every three months, I go through each room with three boxes: keep, donate, trash. The key is being ruthless with the donate box.

I also found that simplifying home organization starts with addressing the inflow. Now I have a 24 hour rule for any new purchase I leave it in the car or garage for a day before bringing it inside. Half the time, I end up returning it.
I approach simplifying home organization from a tech perspective. I digitize everything possible papers, photos, manuals. For physical items, I use the container concept each category gets one designated space (one shelf for books, one drawer for office supplies). When the space is full, something has to go.

This method of physical clutter reduction has been transformative. It creates natural limits and makes maintenance effortless.
With kids, simplifying home organization requires different strategies. We do monthly toy rotations" where most toys are stored away and only a curated selection is available. This not only reduces physical clutter but actually increases play value.

For kid stuff, we have a one in, two out rule. If something new comes in, two similar items go out. The kids help choose what to donate, which teaches them about simplifying home life from an early age.
My approach to physical clutter reduction comes from my travel experience. I treat my home like I'm packing for a long trip what would I actually need and use regularly? Everything else is either stored minimally or removed.

This mindset shift was huge. Instead of asking could I use this someday," I ask "would I pack this for a six month trip?" If not, it probably doesn't belong in my daily living space.
As someone who deals with tech clutter, I found that simplifying home organization starts with cables and chargers. I had a drawer full of them just in case." Now I keep one of each type I actually use and recycle the rest.

Physical clutter reduction for tech items is especially satisfying because you can actually see the space you reclaim. I also label everything clearly so I don't waste time searching.
