I'm always looking for symbolism in media that adds deeper meaning to stories. Some of it is really subtle and easy to miss unless you're paying close attention. Like in The Matrix, the color green representing the Matrix's code, or in Mad Men, all the references to falling that foreshadow Don's eventual collapse.

What symbolism in media have you noticed that most people seem to miss? I'm talking about those hidden movie meanings that aren't obvious but once you see them, they completely change how you view the story.
In The Godfather, the symbolism in media of oranges foreshadowing death is something most people miss. Every time oranges appear on screen, someone is about to die or has just died. Vito buys oranges before he's shot, there are oranges on the table when Sonny is killed, Vito drops oranges when he dies.

It's not just random - in Italian folklore, oranges are associated with death and the underworld. The hidden movie meaning is that the Corleone family's business is fundamentally about death, even when they're trying to appear legitimate. The oranges remind us that violence is always just beneath the surface of their wealthy, respectable facade.
In Blade Runner, the symbolism in media of eyes is everywhere but easy to miss. Eyes are how we perceive reality, and in a film about what's real and what's artificial, they're crucial. The Voight-Kampff test looks at eye reactions, Roy Batty's final speech is about things he's seen, the owl's artificial eyes in Tyrell's office.

The hidden movie meaning is that seeing isn't the same as understanding. Deckard can see that Rachel is a replicant but still falls in love with her. Roy can see his mortality approaching but finds meaning in his experiences. The film is asking whether our experiences are less real if they're artificially created, and the eyes symbolism emphasizes this theme of perception versus reality.
In Parasite, the symbolism in media of stairs representing class hierarchy is brilliant but subtle. The poor Kim family lives in a semi-basement, always looking up. The rich Park family lives in a modern house with clean lines. The secret bunker is underground, representing how the ultra-rich hide their wealth.

The hidden movie meaning is that social mobility is an illusion - you can climb the stairs temporarily, but you'll always fall back down. The final shot of Ki-woo looking at the house from the basement represents how the dream of wealth is always just out of reach for the poor. The stairs aren't just set design, they're a visual representation of the class system the film is critiquing.
