I've been wanting to learn knitting for ages and finally bought some basic supplies. The problem is I'm completely overwhelmed by all the patterns out there. What are some good simple knitting projects for someone who has never knitted before? I'm looking for things that will help me learn the basic stitches without getting frustrated. I've heard scarves are the classic beginner project, but honestly the idea of knitting something that long sounds kind of boring. Are there any other simple knitting projects that are more interesting but still manageable for a total newbie? Also, what yarn and needle sizes would you recommend for these simple knitting projects?
Welcome to knitting! I've been teaching beginners for years and I always recommend starting with simple knitting projects that build confidence. Scarves are traditional but you're right, they can get boring. Here are some better options for simple knitting projects:

1. Dishcloths or washcloths - Small, quick, and you practice basic stitches. Cotton yarn is perfect for these.
2. Headbands or ear warmers - Much faster than a scarf and more satisfying to finish.
3. Simple baby hats - Circular knitting might seem scary but it's actually easier than you think once you get the hang of it.

For yarn, I'd start with a medium weight (worsted) yarn in a light color so you can see your stitches clearly. Needle size 8 or 9 is good for beginners. Avoid dark yarns or fuzzy yarns when you're learning - they make it hard to see what you're doing.

What kind of things would you like to make eventually? That might help narrow down the best simple knitting projects to start with.
I just started knitting a few months ago and I completely understand feeling overwhelmed! I tried starting with a scarf and gave up after a few inches because it was just too monotonous.

What worked for me was starting with a simple knitted coaster. It's tiny so you finish quickly, and you get to practice casting on, the knit stitch, and binding off. I made four of them in different colors and felt so accomplished!

Then I moved on to a basic beanie using circular needles. There are tons of free patterns for beginner hats that are perfect simple knitting projects. The circular needles seemed intimidating at first but there are great YouTube tutorials that walk you through it step by step.

My advice would be to pick one or two simple knitting projects that you'd actually use or gift to someone. It makes the process more rewarding.
I'm not much of a knitter but my sister is, and she always says the best simple knitting projects for beginners are things that don't require shaping or complicated patterns. She started me on a basic ribbed headband and it was perfect because it worked up quickly and I could actually wear it.

She also mentioned that choosing the right yarn makes a huge difference for simple knitting projects. She recommends something smooth like acrylic or cotton rather than wool for beginners because it's easier to work with and frog (rip out) if you make mistakes.

Have you considered making a simple blanket? I know that sounds big, but you can make it in squares and sew them together later. That way each square feels like a completed project.
Thanks for all the suggestions! The dishcloth idea sounds perfect because it's small and practical. I like the idea of making something I'll actually use.

I eventually want to make sweaters and blankets, but I know that's way down the road. For now, I think simple knitting projects like headbands or baby hats sound good. The circular needles do scare me a bit though. Are they really that much harder than straight needles?

Also, what about those loom knitting things? I've seen them at craft stores and they look even easier than needles. Are those good for simple knitting projects or should I stick with traditional needles?

For yarn, I bought some medium weight acrylic in a light blue. Is that okay to start with?
Light blue acrylic is perfect for your first simple knitting projects! You'll be able to see your stitches clearly.

Circular needles aren't harder, they're just different. Some people actually find them easier because the weight of your project rests in your lap instead of on the needles. For simple knitting projects like hats, they're essential unless you want to sew seams (which most beginners hate). I'd recommend starting with straight needles for your first project or two, then trying circulars.

Loom knitting is a whole different craft. It's easier in some ways but you won't learn the traditional knitting skills. If you want to be able to follow most knitting patterns eventually, I'd stick with needles. But if you just want to make simple knitted items quickly, looms can be fun.

For your first simple knitting projects, I'd say make a dishcloth to practice basic stitches, then try a headband on straight needles, then move to a hat on circulars. That progression builds skills nicely.
I tried loom knitting before switching to needles and honestly, I wish I had just started with needles. The looms are limited in what you can make and the stitches look different. With needles, you have so many more options for simple knitting projects and beyond.

The progression that SeasonedStitcher suggested is exactly what I did! Dishcloth, then headband, then hat. By the time I got to the hat, I was comfortable enough with the basics that learning to use circular needles wasn't too scary.

One thing that really helped me with simple knitting projects was joining a local knitting group. Having someone there to show me how to fix mistakes made a huge difference. Maybe check if there's one in your area or even an online community.

Also, don't be afraid to make mistakes! Every knitter has a pile of wonky first projects. It's part of the learning process with simple knitting projects.
Okay, I'm convinced! I'll start with needles and follow that progression. Dishcloth first sounds manageable. Are there any particular patterns you'd recommend for absolute beginner simple knitting projects? Something with very clear instructions?

Also, how long should I expect my first dishcloth to take? I don't want to get discouraged if it takes forever.

I'll look for local knitting groups too. That sounds like it would be really helpful, especially for fixing mistakes. I'm already worried about dropping stitches or making other errors.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I feel much more confident about starting these simple knitting projects now.
