I'm considering getting some extra help with my organic chemistry class and I'm overwhelmed by all the online tutoring resources out there. Some are crazy expensive while others seem too cheap to be good. Has anyone actually paid for online tutoring resources that made a real difference in their grades? I'm specifically looking for platforms that have tutors who really know their stuff and can explain complex concepts in ways that actually stick.
I tried a few different online tutoring resources for statistics last year. Chegg Tutors was okay for quick questions but expensive if you need regular help. Wyzant was better because you can browse tutor profiles and see their qualifications and reviews. I found a grad student there who really knew her stuff and was affordable. The key is being specific about what you need help with during sessions.
For organic chemistry specifically, I've heard good things about Khan Academy's free resources. They have a whole organic chemistry section with videos and practice problems. Before paying for anything, I'd check if your school offers free tutoring through the chemistry department. Many universities have peer tutoring programs that are included in tuition.
I used Varsity Tutors for calculus and it was decent but pricey. What worked better for me was finding a small study group and splitting the cost of a tutor. We'd book 2 hour sessions and all join the video call. Made it much more affordable and we could all benefit from each other's questions too.
Check if your textbook publisher offers any online tutoring resources. Many of them include access to tutoring services with book purchases. Also, some community colleges offer affordable online tutoring even if you're not enrolled there. Might be worth looking into local options before going with the big national services.
