I've been thinking a lot about disability rights community support and how we can create more inclusive communities. It seems like a lot of disability support is either very institutional (through government programs) or very individual (family care), with not much in between at the community level.
What does effective disability rights community support look like? I'm interested in everything from physical accessibility improvements to social inclusion initiatives to practical support networks. How do we move beyond just compliance with accessibility laws to actually creating communities where people with disabilities can fully participate?
I'm also curious about how to involve people with disabilities in designing these support systems. Too often, well meaning people create programs without actually consulting the people they're meant to serve. How do we avoid that?
If you're involved in disability rights work or have experience with community based support systems, what models have you seen work? What are the biggest gaps in current community support, and what would it take to fill them?
I believe communities should support all their members, and I want to help make that happen in practical ways.
